Poetry: Penumbra

Penumbra

The shadow on the moon
blots out light,
like ink on a page
like fear in her
heart

Red shadows
blood spilt
over the starry
expanse of sky,
between the spaces
the silence
lies.

The dead whisper
their secrets
where we cannot
hear.

The stars are failing
as light is fading
and her eyes
have gone
blind.

These constellations
were once memorized
in the depths of night
when she was young
and her father sung
in a child’s ears
he had no
fear.

The retrograde
brings no relief
as shadows
fade back
to light
she is left
with a chill
in the empty
spaces.

Only the wind
echoes
here.
